Gibson intentionally avoided English to ensure authenticity, choosing reconstructed Aramaic, Hebrew, and Latin.
Mel Gibson, who had already made a name for himself as an actor and director, embarked on what would become one of the most ambitious and controversial projects of his career. The idea for the film came from a deep, personal place for Gibson, who had long wanted to depict the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ with unflinching authenticity. He co-wrote the screenplay with Benedict Fitzgerald and, crucially, decided to finance the film himself when major studios balked at its graphic content and the decision to shoot entirely in Aramaic and Latin.
