Surviving in refugee camps, he turns to petty crime before being discovered by the Indian Army. It is in the army that his talent for running is noticed by a strict yet fatherly coach, Gurudev Singh (Pavan Malhotra). The film then traces his meteoric rise in the world of sports, his international victories, and his eventual reconciliation with his past. The title, "Bhaag Milkha Bhaag," originates from a scene where a Pakistani official calls out to Milkha during his visit to Pakistan many years later, urging him to run to his old home in a deeply emotional sequence.
