Perhaps no cultural artifact ties the communities together more tightly than Ballroom. Originating in Harlem in the 1960s, the ballroom scene was a sanctuary for Black and Latinx queer and trans youth. It gave us voguing, categories like "Realness," and a unique vernacular. In this space, a gay man walking the "Butch Queen" category and a trans woman walking the "Realness" category exist under the same roof, judged by the same community.
