The story follows legendary frontiersman , a fur trapper navigating the treacherous, uncharted terrains of the American Midwest. While scouting ahead during a fur-trading expedition in 1823, Glass is horrifically mauled by a massive grizzly bear, sustaining grievous, life-threatening injuries. Unable to carry him through the harsh wilderness, the expedition’s captain, Andrew Henry (Domhnall Gleeson), reluctantly leaves Glass with a small detail: the inexperienced Jim Bridger (Will Poulter), Glass's son, Hawk (Forrest Goodluck), and the ruthless mercenary John Fitzgerald (Tom Hardy). Fitzgerald quickly abandons all pretense of mercy. He murders Hawk in front of his helpless father, brutally buries Glass alive, and flees with the gullible Bridger. Miraculously, Glass claws his way out of his own grave. The word "Revenant" means "one who returns after death or a long absence". What follows is an odyssey of excruciating hardship: crawling through icy rivers, sleeping inside the carcass of a dead horse for warmth, and dodging both hostile Arikara warriors and his own crumbling sanity, all in a single-minded pursuit of revenge.

Cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki won an Oscar for his work on this film. He shot The Revenant entirely using natural light (sunlight and firelight) in the remote wilderness of Canada and Argentina.
